Edward Thorp and the Book That Changed the Game

In 1962 a mathematician named Edward Thorp published Beat the Dealer and did something nobody had managed before: he proved that a casino game could be beaten, and then told everyone how. Every counting system in use today descends from that book.

What the book actually proved
Before Thorp, blackjack was assumed to be a losing game like any other. What he showed was that it has a property the others do not: the cards do not come back. As the shoe empties its composition drifts, and the drift is knowable.
Thorp, a mathematics PhD, programmed an IBM 704 mainframe at MIT to work out both an optimal basic strategy and a system for tracking that drift — the Ten Count, which followed the ratio of ten-value cards to the rest. It is cruder than the Hi-Lo count that replaced it, and the idea underneath is identical.
What happened next
The book was a bestseller, and casinos reacted badly. In 1964 several Las Vegas casinos changed the rules of blackjack — restricting doubling and splitting — to make counting harder.
It backfired. Players stopped playing a game that was visibly worse, revenue fell, and the rules were largely reversed within weeks. What the casinos adopted instead was what they still use: more decks, shallower penetration, shuffling machines, and the right to refuse service. Every one of those is a descendant of 1962.
The part that is often missed
Thorp’s more consequential work was not about cards. He applied the same reasoning — find a mispriced bet, size it correctly, repeat — to financial markets, and the fund he ran was extremely successful over a long period.
The connecting idea is the Kelly criterion: given an edge, there is a mathematically correct amount to bet. That is arguably the more useful half of the book, and the half nobody made a film about.
