Blackjack or Roulette?

Updated

Blackjack, by a distance — 0.46% against 5.26% on a double-zero wheel. Your money lasts roughly eleven times longer. The one thing that reverses this is playing blackjack badly, which is common enough to be worth its own warning.

The short version
Every blackjack figure on this page is computed with our own solver and checked against an independent reference. The house edge calculator adds them up for one specific rule set, and the live calculator applies the same numbers at the table.

The edge, and what it buys

Stake $100 across an evening. Blackjack with correct play takes about $0.46; double-zero roulette takes $5.26. Same money, same evening, eleven times the cost.

Roulette’s number comes from a single fact: the wheel has 38 pockets and pays as though it had 36. Every bet on the layout carries that same 5.26%, which is why no roulette system has ever worked or can.

Blackjack occupies both the best and nearly the worst position. Roulette only ever occupies the middle.

One game has decisions and one does not

This is the real difference and it cuts both ways. Roulette asks nothing of you, so you cannot play it badly. Blackjack asks a great deal, and a player who refuses to risk busting is paying 3.49% — about two thirds of a roulette wheel, at a table they chose because it had better odds.

If you are not going to learn the chart, the honest advice is that the difference between the two games is much smaller than the reputation suggests.

Only one of them can be beaten

No amount of study changes a roulette wheel. Blackjack can, in principle, be turned positive by counting cards — but that needs a deep shoe, a real bet spread, a bankroll and hours, and most tables you can reach no longer provide the first two.

The realistic version: blackjack is the cheapest entertainment on the casino floor for someone willing to learn a chart. Not an income.
