Blackjack Card Values

Updated

Cards 2 through 10 are worth their number. Jacks, queens, and kings are worth 10 each. An ace is worth 1 or 11, whichever helps you, and it flips between them on its own. It counts as 11 until that would put you over 21, and then it quietly becomes a 1.

Suits are decoration. Hearts and spades play identically, and no blackjack rule anywhere depends on the suit of a card. The only exceptions are side bets such as Perfect Pairs, which are separate wagers with their own math.

Soft hands and hard hands

A soft hand has an ace being counted as 11. A‑6 is a soft 17, and one more card cannot bust it, because the ace drops to 1 if it needs to. Draw a 9 to soft 17 and you have a hard 16 rather than a bust.

A hard hand has no ace worth 11. Either there is no ace at all, or the ace already dropped to 1 to keep the hand alive.

This distinction drives half the strategy chart. Soft 18 and hard 18 are the same number and completely different hands.

Why ten-value cards run the game

There are four ranks worth 10: the ten itself plus three face cards. That is 16 out of every 52 cards, or 30.8% of the deck. No other value comes close.

Everything in blackjack bends around that fact.

Those last two are the entire reason card counting works. A shoe full of tens is good for you twice over and bad for the dealer once.

Card values in the Hi-Lo system

Counting ignores point values completely and sorts cards into three buckets instead.

CardsHi-Lo tagWhat it means
2, 3, 4, 5, 6+1A small card left the shoe, which is good for you
7, 8, 90Roughly neutral, ignore it
10, J, Q, K, A−1A big card left the shoe, which is bad for you

A high running count means the small cards are gone and the big ones are still in there. That is the whole idea, and how to count cards takes it from here.

Knowing the tags is not the same as using them. At table speed you have no time to think about which bucket a card is in. The Fast Values drill builds that reflex.

Worth keeping straight:
• 2–10 face value, face cards 10, ace 1 or 11.
• Soft means an ace counted as 11, and soft hands cannot bust in one card.
• Ten-value cards are 30.8% of the deck, which is why they matter most.

Are jokers used in blackjack?

No. Blackjack uses standard 52-card decks with the jokers removed before play. Four suits, thirteen ranks from 2 up through ace, nothing else.

That is why an eight-deck shoe holds exactly 416 cards, and why counters divide by physical decks rather than by anything more complicated.

Which combinations make 21?

The valuable one is a blackjack: an ace with any ten-value card, on your first two cards. In a six-deck game you will be dealt one about 4.75% of the time, or roughly once every 21 hands.

Everything else that reaches 21 is an ordinary 21. Sevens across, 10‑5‑6, A‑4‑6, and so on. Those pay 1:1, and the dealer can push you by making 21 as well. Three or more cards never pays 3:2, no matter how it got there.
