How to Count Cards, Step by Step

Updated

Start with the Hi‑Lo tags: 2 through 6 are +1, 7 through 9 are 0, and tens through aces are −1. Drill a single deck until you can run it clean in under thirty seconds. Only then add the true count and a bet spread. Doing those last two first is the classic way to waste a month.

While the count is still slow, let the tool do the heavy lifting. Our live counter tracks the running count and the true count for you and calls the correct play. It doubles as a trainer, so you learn while you play.
The short version

The seven steps, in order

  1. Memorize basic strategy cold. Counting without it is pointless, and we mean that arithmetically.
  2. Learn the Hi‑Lo tags. 2 through 6 are +1, 7 through 9 are 0, tens and aces are −1.
  3. Drill the running count on one deck until you are fast and clean.
  4. Learn to eyeball the discard tray and call how many decks are left to within half a deck.
  5. Convert to the true count. Running count divided by decks remaining.
  6. Add a bet spread. Minimum at a neutral count, more as the true count climbs.
  7. Practice at table speed and learn to look like everyone else while you do it.

One rule sits on top of all of it: you start counting on a fresh shuffle, never partway through a shoe. The cards the dealer buries after the shuffle need no adjustment at all, which we explain in burn cards.

How long does this take?

You will understand Hi‑Lo in about five minutes. You will count a deck reliably after a few evenings at the kitchen table. Getting to table speed with clean true count conversion takes weeks to months.

None of it requires talent. It requires reps. And there is no point speeding up while you are still making errors at a slow pace, because all you build is a faster mistake.

How to drill at home

A quick drill lives inside our live counter: tap +1 / 0 / −1 as the cards come and watch both counts move.

No deck handy? The tags alone drill fine on a phone. The Fast Values exercise has three speed settings.

What beginners get wrong

When are you ready for a real table?

When you can do all three of these at once:

Until then, stay home. A mistake in your living room costs nothing.

Worth keeping straight:
• Basic strategy first, counting second.
• Hi‑Lo: 2–6 = +1, 7–9 = 0, 10–A = −1.
• A deck under thirty seconds, clean, before you add anything.
• Bet off the true count, never the running count.
• Stay quiet and stay ordinary.
