Burn Cards: Why the Dealer Buries the First Card

Right after the shuffle, the dealer slides a card off the top and drops it in the discard tray without showing it to anyone. That is a burn card. It looks like a problem for counting, and new counters worry about it constantly. They should not. Hi‑Lo handles a burn card by itself, and you make no adjustment whatsoever. What does matter is when you start counting.
- You change nothing. A burned card is exactly as unknown to you as a card sitting behind the cut card, and your count already treats it that way.
- Burning a card just moves the cut card up by one. That is the cleanest way to think about it.
- Start at zero on a fresh shuffle. Sitting down mid‑shoe and guessing a number is the real beginner mistake.
- The scale is tiny. Five burned cards are 1.2% of an eight‑deck shoe. The cut card hides 208 cards, or 42 times as many.
What a burn card is
After the shuffle and the cut, the dealer takes one or more cards off the top of the shoe and places them face down in the discard tray. Nobody sees them. Not the players, not the dealer.
Casinos do this for security. It defeats anyone who has managed to mark the top card, and it defeats the sharper trick of catching a glimpse of the first card as the shoe is loaded and the deck is cut. Burning the top card makes both worthless. Some of it is also plain tradition, carried over from poker.
How many cards get burned
In American shoe games the standard is one card after each shuffle. House procedure varies, though, and some rooms burn several. Live dealer tables online sometimes burn more than a land‑based pit would.
The good news is that this is not a number you need to know. The table below shows why.

The last row is the whole point. The cut card buries 42 times more cards than a five‑card burn does. If you can live with 208 unknown cards, five of them will not keep you up at night.
Why you never adjust for it
Hi‑Lo is a balanced system. Add up the tags across a full deck and you get exactly zero: 20 cards worth +1, 20 worth −1, and 12 worth nothing.
One useful consequence falls out of that. Your running count is always the exact opposite of the combined value of every card you have not seen. Burned cards belong to that group, the same as the cards that will never come out from behind the cut card.
So your true count already describes the entire remainder of the shoe, burn card included. Nothing drifts out of alignment, because you divide by physical decks left in the shoe rather than by the cards that will actually be dealt.
When to start counting
This matters far more than burn cards ever will.
You start counting on a fresh shuffle, at zero. If you sit down in the middle of a shoe, you have no idea what has already come out, and any number you put in your head is invented. A made‑up count is worse than no count, because you will size your bets off it.
What to do when the table is already in play:
- Wait for the shuffle. With eight decks and the cut card near the middle, that is a few minutes at most.
- Sit out or flat bet the minimum until then. There is nothing to gain from starting halfway.
- Watch for the cut card. Once it appears, you know the current shoe is finishing and a fresh one is close.
When the shuffle is done, you count from zero, and it makes no difference how many cards go in the tray first.
What if you catch a glimpse of it
Dealers occasionally flash a burn card by accident. If you see it, count it like any other card. It stopped being unknown, so it belongs in your running count.
Do not go looking for it, though. Leaning across the layout or craning to see into the discard tray is exactly the behavior that gets you noticed, and it buys you a fraction of a point.
Numbers worth knowing
- A single random card has an average Hi‑Lo value of exactly zero. The system is balanced, so on average a burn card moves your count nowhere at all.
- Burning five cards shortens the shoe by 1.2%. Penetration slips from 50% to about 48.8%, a difference you will never feel in an hour of play.
- Even burning a full deck of 52 cards would still hide less than a quarter of what the cut card hides.
- A continuous shuffling machine, on the other hand, ends counting completely. The problem there is not a few cards, it is that the shoe never runs down.
