What Is the Best Card Counting System?

For almost everyone, the answer is Hi‑Lo. It is the most widely used count in the world, it takes an afternoon to learn, and it captures the great majority of what any counting system can capture. The advanced counts do beat it on paper. What they add is measured in tenths of a percent, and what they cost is measured in mistakes.

Level 1 means every card is worth +1, 0, or −1, which is about as easy as arithmetic gets. Level 2 adds +2 and −2 tags. That buys accuracy and costs speed, because you can no longer cancel a pair of cards at a glance.
An unbalanced system such as KO does not sum to zero across the deck. That is the whole trick: because the count naturally drifts upward as low cards come out, you can act on the running count directly and never convert to a true count. You give up a little precision for one less thing to do under pressure.

How systems are actually judged
The literature scores a count on three numbers, and they pull in different directions.
- Betting correlation tells you how well the count predicts your advantage on the next hand. This drives your bet sizing, and bet sizing is where nearly all of your money comes from.
- Playing efficiency tells you how well the count guides individual decisions, meaning the hands where a high count flips a hit into a stand.
- Insurance correlation tells you how reliably it spots a profitable insurance bet.

These correlations are the standard figures from the card counting literature, originally derived by Peter Griffin. They are the one set of numbers on this site we cite rather than compute, because deriving them requires effect-of-removal data for a full basic strategy game. Read the table with the first column weighted heavily. Hi‑Lo sits at 0.97 for betting, which is within a rounding error of the best system ever published. The level‑2 counts buy you playing efficiency, and playing efficiency is the smaller pot of money.
How much better is an advanced system, really?
Under identical conditions, moving from Hi‑Lo to a well-run level‑2 count is worth roughly a tenth of a percent in win rate. Not a full percent. A tenth.
And you only collect it if you run the harder system as fast and as accurately as you ran the easy one. That is the part people skip past. A level‑2 count doubles the number of distinct values you are tracking, kills the pairing shortcut that makes Hi‑Lo fast, and usually comes bundled with a separate ace side count you have to keep at the same time.
What matters more than your choice of system
- Penetration. How deep into the shoe the dealer goes before shuffling. On a six-deck game you want no more than a deck and a half cut off. A game with two and a half decks behind the cut card cannot be beaten by any system ever devised.
- Bet spread. Flat betting a perfect count earns you nothing. The edge lives entirely in betting more when the count is high, which is also what gets you noticed.
- Error rate. See the box above. Accuracy is not a virtue here, it is the product.
- Speed. At a full table with a fast dealer you have no time to think. The count has to run on its own while you talk to the person next to you.
- Cover. The house can refuse to deal to you. See is card counting legal.
Every item on that list outweighs the difference between Hi‑Lo and Omega II, and four of the five are free.
How long does Hi-Lo take to learn?
The tags themselves take an afternoon. Speed is a different animal. Expect tens of hours of practice before you can run a deck clean in under twenty seconds and hold the count while somebody is talking to you.
Before any of that, basic strategy has to be automatic. Mistakes on ordinary hands cost more than counting pays, and the specific numbers are in which mistakes cost the most.
So which one should you pick?
Learn Hi‑Lo. Run it until it is boring. If you are still playing seriously a year later and your execution is genuinely clean, look at Zen or Omega II then, and expect a small improvement rather than a transformation.
The counters who make money are not the ones with the most sophisticated system. They are the ones who find a game with deep penetration, spread their bets without getting thrown out, and never drop the count.
