The MIT Blackjack Team

Groups of students, mostly from MIT, ran organized counting teams from 1979 into the 1990s. The counting itself was ordinary. What made them work was the structure that made it work: how to bet large without looking like you know something.

What they actually did
A solo counter faces an unavoidable problem: the moment you raise your bet with the count, you have told anyone watching what you are doing. Team play removes it.
Spotters sat at several tables flat-betting the minimum, counting quietly, looking like ordinary students losing slowly. When a shoe turned favorable they signalled. A big player walked over, sat down, bet large immediately, and left when it cooled — never ramping, never appearing to count.
To surveillance that looks like a lucky high roller, which is the most welcome customer in the building. The structure in full.
What it was worth, honestly
Real, and less cinematic than the legend. A team’s edge came from the same arithmetic as any counter’s — roughly one percent when conditions were good — multiplied by many more hands per hour across several players, and with a pooled bankroll that made going broke unlikely.
What ended teams was rarely the mathematics. It was the ordinary difficulties: disputes about money, the effort of keeping several people counting accurately for hours, and the fact that a group is far easier to identify than one person once surveillance starts looking.
Why it would be harder now
The teams operated when six-deck shoes were dealt deep, shuffling was done by hand and surveillance meant a person watching a monitor.
Since then: shallower penetration, continuous shufflers, facial recognition and shared databases between properties. None of it is illegal to work around, and all of it makes the arithmetic thinner.
