Zappit Blackjack: What Throwing the Hand Away Is Worth

Deal a hard 15, 16 or 17 and you may bin it — both cards go away and you get two new ones. We computed that privilege at 6.36 percentage points. The dealer then pushes on 22, which costs you 6.95. That is the whole game, and the trade does not favor you.

The trade
Six decks, dealer hits soft 17, blackjack pays 3:2, re-splitting to four hands. We compute the ordinary version of that game at 0.62%. Add the push-22 rule and it becomes 7.57%. Add the zap and it comes back down to 1.21%.
That is the honest summary of Zappit: an expensive rule dressed up with a fun one. The zap is genuinely large — six and a third points is not a gimmick — it simply is not quite large enough.
When to zap
Almost always. We computed the correct play for every hard total in the zap range against every dealer upcard, in the live version where the range runs to 18.

The seventeen is the row that surprises people. At a normal table you stand on 17 against a weak dealer card and take your chances. Here you throw it away, because the push-22 rule has quietly gutted what a made 17 is worth: a large share of the dealer bust outcomes that used to pay you now pay nothing. A hand that only wins when the dealer breaks is a hand worth much less than it looks.
Eight-eight against a 5, 6 or 7 is the one place where an ordinary blackjack instinct survives. Splitting two eights against a weak dealer card is strong enough to beat a fresh pair of cards; every other sixteen is not, and neither is 8-8 against anything higher.
The line nobody reads
Zappit exists in more than one form, and the difference is not the zap range — it is a single sentence about what happens when your two new cards make 21. We computed all three readings, with the zap range held fixed at 15 to 17:

Nearly six tenths of a percentage point sits between the top and bottom rows — more than the entire house edge of a good blackjack table — and it turns on one clause most write-ups skip entirely. The online version pays that 21 as an immediate even-money winner; the live version treats it as 21 points.
We mention this partly because we got it wrong ourselves the first time. If a variant's payout table has an odd corner in it, that corner is usually where the money is.
Our numbers against the published ones
We compute 1.212% for the live version against a published 1.24%. That three-hundredths gap runs the same way in every variant we model fully — published figures come from simulations dealt with a cut card and played from a chart, and ours is the exact composition played perfectly.
The online version is the one we cannot quite pin down: we get 1.235% where the operator publishes 1.15%. In that version you may zap before the dealer checks for blackjack, which our model does not reproduce, and that is the most likely home for the difference. We would rather name it than bury it.
The two rule effects at the top of this page are unaffected by any of that. They are measured identically in every configuration we ran, and the push-22 figure of 6.95% is the same one we get in Free Bet Blackjack, which uses the same rule.
