Card counting: how it actually works
Plain English, no jargon for its own sake. ยท Updated
Card counting is a way of tracking whether the cards left in the shoe are mostly high or mostly low. Low cards (2–6) count as +1, high cards (10, face cards, aces) count as −1, and 7 through 9 count as nothing. When the running total climbs, more high cards are still in there — and that is when the player has the advantage.
- The goal: know when the shoe is rich in high cards. That is when you raise your bet.
- The method: give every card a value of +1, 0, or −1 and keep a running total (the running count).
- The conversion: divide the running count by the decks still left to get the true count. That is the number you actually bet on.
- The edge is small — a percent or two, and only over the long run. This is not a shortcut to money.
- It only works on a physical shoe with decent penetration. Online RNG blackjack is immune.
Card counting has a reputation it does not deserve. The movie version puts a math prodigy at the table, memorizing every card that falls. The real thing is much plainer. Nobody memorizes cards. You are keeping one rough sense of the shoe: are there more high cards left, or more low ones? That is the whole idea. Everything after that is practice and speed.
Why it matters
In blackjack you are playing against the house. One rule explains everything that follows:
A shoe full of low cards favors the dealer.
High cards work for the player. They make blackjacks more common, and a blackjack pays 3:2. They make the dealer bust more often. They make your double downs pay off. Low cards do the opposite: they rescue the dealer, letting a weak hand grow into a strong one without busting. And you act first, so when the shoe is full of low cards, you are the one taking the risk. Counting is simply a way to recognize the moment the shoe turns rich — and bet more when it does.
The Hi-Lo system: three groups
The most common counting system, and the easiest, is Hi-Lo. It sorts every card into one of three groups and gives each group a single value:

Add up every card in the shoe and you land on exactly zero. That is what makes Hi-Lo a "balanced" system, and it is why the running count converts cleanly into a true count.

Are there systems other than Hi-Lo?
Hi-Lo is the most widely used, but it is not the only one. Systems differ in the values they assign and in how precise they are. Level-two systems such as Zen and Omega II use +2 and −2 as well. They track the shoe more closely, and they are harder to hold in your head. KO takes a different route: it is unbalanced, which means it skips the true count conversion entirely.

Running count: adding and subtracting
Wait for a shuffle and start at zero. Every card that shows up gets counted as it lands — yours, the other players', and the dealer's. Low is +1, high is −1, middle is nothing. That running total is the running count.
You cannot join a shoe halfway through, because you do not know what already came out. The card the dealer burns after the shuffle, on the other hand, is nothing to worry about — see burn card.
Running total: +1 − 1 + 1 + 1 − 1 + 0 + 1 = +2. The running count is +2.
That is exactly what the Live Counter does for you. You tap +1, 0, or −1 as the cards land, or use the arrow keys. You never have to pick out a specific card, which is what makes it possible to keep up at table speed.
True count: adjusting for decks
There is a catch. A running count of +6 means one thing with a single deck left and something else entirely with six decks left. Across six decks, +6 is almost nothing. In one deck, it is a large edge. That is why the running count gets converted into a true count:
The true count is also the only time insurance is worth taking — at +3 and above. Without a count, insurance is always a losing bet.
The higher the true count, the bigger your edge and the more you bet. A simplified betting ramp looks like this:
What your real edge is
Here is the honest comparison. "Edge" is the share of everything you bet that you keep over the long run, as a percentage. A positive number means you are ahead. Watch where the bars cross into the green:

Two things are worth noticing. First, even a player running perfect basic strategy is still slightly behind, which is why strategy alone does not get you there. Second, counting flips that, but the edge is small — a percent or two. The money comes from betting more during the rare stretches when the count is high, and keeping your bets down the rest of the time.
Penetration and the cut card
A dealer never deals the whole shoe. A cut card sits somewhere inside it, and once the deal reaches that card, the shoe gets shuffled. How much of the shoe gets dealt before that happens is called penetration. The deeper the deal, the more counting is worth, because the count has time to build before the cards go back in the shuffler.
Why casinos object
Casinos make money by holding a mathematical edge over every player at the table. A counter occasionally turns that edge around, and the house would rather that did not happen. Nothing about it is cheating — keeping a count in your head is just thinking — but a casino is a private business. The countermeasures are familiar:
- Frequent shuffles and shallow penetration, so the count never has time to build.
- Shuffling machines, including continuous ones, which make counting pointless.
- More decks in play, usually six or eight, so a single card matters less.
- Watching the floor. Staff recognize a player whose bets jump around with the count, and they can ask that player to leave.
That is why experienced players keep a low profile: they avoid dramatic jumps in bet size, they do not look like professionals, and they do not sit at one table for long.
Where card counting came from
Card counting traces back to the mathematician Edward Thorp, whose 1962 book Beat the Dealer was the first to prove that blackjack could be beaten. It reached the public imagination through the MIT team, a group of students who won millions at casino tables and later inspired the movie 21. Since then it has been an endless back-and-forth between players and casinos.
Is it legal, and where does it work?
The short answer: card counting is a legal mental skill. You are not using a device and you are not interfering with the game. A casino can still refuse to serve you, because a casino is private property. There is a longer discussion in is card counting legal.
Counting only works where the cards come from a real shoe that empties as the game goes on and gets shuffled after a while — a live table with eight decks and a shuffle around the halfway mark, for example. Online RNG blackjack reshuffles after every hand, so there is nothing to track. Most live online tables shuffle early enough that counting does not pay either.
